Does a travel eSIM work with WhatsApp?

Yes. WhatsApp runs over mobile data, so it keeps working on your usual number with a data-only travel eSIM: messages, voice notes, voice and video calls all go over the eSIM. You do not get a new number and you do not need to re-verify WhatsApp. The same applies to iMessage, FaceTime and Telegram.

How it works

Your WhatsApp account is tied to your phone number, not to the SIM that carries the data. The F*ck Limits eSIM is data-only: it adds a data line next to your home SIM. Keep your home SIM installed (with data roaming off) so you can still receive SMS codes, and set the eSIM as your mobile data line.

Setup in 4 steps

  • Install the eSIM at home on Wi-Fi.
  • Keep your home line as the default for calls, SMS and iMessage/WhatsApp.
  • Set the eSIM as your Cellular Data line and turn off "Allow Cellular Data Switching".
  • When you land, turn on Data Roaming for the eSIM line only.

Good to know

  • A WhatsApp call uses about 0.5-1 MB per minute (voice) or 5-10 MB per minute (video), well within any plan.
  • In mainland China, the China plan routes through a Hong Kong IP, so WhatsApp, Google and Instagram work.
  • Some countries restrict internet calling apps under local rules; messaging generally keeps working.

FAQ

Will my WhatsApp number change?

No. WhatsApp stays on your usual number. The eSIM only provides data.

Do I need to re-verify WhatsApp?

No. You stay logged in. Keep your home SIM in the phone in case WhatsApp ever sends an SMS code.

Can I make WhatsApp calls?

Yes, voice and video calls work over the eSIM data.

Does iMessage keep my number too?

Yes. Keep your home line selected for iMessage and FaceTime in Settings; they run over the eSIM data.
